Anantmool, the plant has been mentioned as an important medicine in the ancient Indian literature. In 1864, it was admitted in the British Pharmacoepia.

Plant description

Indian sarsaparilla is a perennial twining or creeping herb, with a woody fragrant root stock. It has a slender hairless stem, variable dark green leaves, greenish flower in small compact clusters and narrow cylindrical fruits. The dried root constitutes the drug.

Habitat

The plant is available throughout India. It is commonly found in Bengal, Maharashtra and extends to Travancore.

Chemical constituents

The root contains coumarino-lignoids, hemidesmine, hemidesmin-1, 2. The stem contains pregnane glycosides, hemidine, hemidescine, emidine and indicine, a triterpene lactone, a lupanone, besides Lupeol acetate, sitosterol and hexadecanoic acid and several hydroxyl – methoxy benzaldehydes.

Actions
